Excerpt from Journal of the Fourteenth Annual Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Easton: Held in St. James' Church, Port Deposit, June 7th and 8th, 1882There has been a great awakening of activities in the church itself. Conservatism was for a time her inevitable policy. She was afraid to change anything lest essentials might be lost. But now, assured of her footing, she seeks to adapt her ministrations to the ascertained needs of the people, and so to vary them so as to enlarge her opportunities of usefulness.Profoundly interesting in this connection is the Revision of the Liturgy now in progress, with a view to enrichment and to flexibility of use.The duties of the Committee to whom this subject is entrusted have largely occupied my mind and filled my heart for the past three years.The conclusions of that Committee have need to be accurately formulated before they can be laid before the Church. Any summary of them, given in advance would be misleading, if not unintelligible.So thoroughly and prudently and lovingly has this work been done, that I do not doubt it will be heartily approved when presented to the Church.I have suggested that the Church of our affections has in the past steadily gained upon the confidence of the nation, and I cannot but believe that there is a bright future before her, if only she shall be true to herself.I argue this from her very antagonism in many respects to the spirit of the age. Believe me, Brethren, in the end, that Church which seeks to guide the faith and manners of the multitude will be stronger than that which accommodates itself to the temper of the hour.It is an age of negation; men are denying God and the Bible and Church and Sunday; denying the indissolubility of marriage and the rights of property.Sober and thoughtful people recognize the conservative value of an institution which calmly asserts the old-fashioned orthodoxy which underlies our religious and social fabric, It is a day of religious novelty and unrest.
